Gustav W. Verderber spent the summer of 2003 as a photo guide for Kodak learning the cracks and crevices of Yellowstone National Park. Photographing Yellowstone National Park: Where to Find Perfect Shots and How to Take Them is the result of his first-hand experience and a desire to provide an accurate, truly useful photographer’s guide. This well thought out, clearly written book certainly meets his goals.
The 2007 book is a lightweight, durable guide with easy to view, conveniently sized maps that lay out the park into six districts. Each of these districts is labeled with numerals denoting popular photo spots. Checking the text for any of these 95 numerals will give the reader interesting bits of natural history, suggestions for lenses, notes about how the scene changes from season to season, certain cautions or insights based on the author’s experience and when and where to find the best light. And like a well-composed photograph anyone may appreciate at first glance, the author’s prose has the same effect – instantly appealing – not too complex, but factual with just enough personal narrative to give the reader a sense of being there and desire to see for oneself.
Photographing Yellowstone National Park is applicable to all photographic skill levels. The overview style likely will be most useful for those who are new to the park. It would be a great time-saver; I highly recommend it.
